Rules of Playing With Pokémon Cards

Are you fascinated with Pokémon and its whole series? With so many animated animals and characters, it is hard to keep your emotions in check because the popularity of the show throughout the world is unmatched. In fact, when the Pokémon Go game hit the Android and the iOS market, people were going crazy searching for their favorite Pokémon and catching them wherever they could. Very few cartoon shows have had such a global impact, and that has also popularized the playing with Pokémon cards too. These cards are not like the ones that you see on a poker table. This deck will have all your favorite Pokémon characters and animals, and you will have to fight your opponent with the cards that you have got. If you are not aware of the rules of playing the game, here is a simple guide that will help:

Shuffle and draw

A Pokémon deck consists of 60 cards. Shuffle them up real nice. Before you distribute the card, there has to be a coin toss to decide who gets to draw the cards first. The first player will not be able to attack the first turn. Suppose you win the coin toss; you will have to draw 7 cards and put them face down. Check if you have got any card that has got “Basic” written on the top corner. If you have not got a Basic card, you will have to shuffle and draw 7 cards again. But, your opponent will get an extra card because this situation is known as the Mulligan.

The rules of the game

Check the cards that you have drawn and see if there are any active Pokémon cards. These will be used to attack. Keep them face down. If you have more than one active card, pick one and keep the rest as the bench. You will be allowed to have 5 active cards at a time on one bench.

How to play

After you have used the basic Pokémon card and benched the active ones, you will have to draw a card. If you have got energy cards in your drawn cards, you can use them to attach to the cards that you are playing with, but you will be able to use only one energy card per turn. There will also be Trainer cards. These come with specific instructions, and you can change your Pokémon animal or get to choose your supporters or pick a stadium and so on. The trainer card can be activated when you are almost down and out.

There is also the stage where you can evolve your Pokémon. If you have got an active Pokémon card on the bench and also an evolve card, you can place that card on top of the benched Pokémon and evolve its powers. However, you will not be able to evolve the Pokémon on your first turn.

Use the special abilities of different Pokémons while playing the game. You will find Pokémon cards that come with special abilities. Make sure you use them to defeat your opponent’s Pokémon.

If you do not want a particular Pokémon to carry on, you can retreat that card, but you will have to spend some energy card as compensation. The retreat cost of the particular Pokémon will be mentioned on the card. Also, you will not be able to retreat more than once in one turn.

Attacking your opponent’s Pokémon is one of the most exciting parts of the game. But you will only be able to attack once per turn and not on your first turn of the game. The attack will depend on the power of the Pokémon that you have selected. Remember, you will have to attack using the active cards and the ones that are on the bench. The power of the attack will also be mentioned on the card. Always check the weakness and resistance of the active cards that you are using. If your opponent counterattacks, your active card should have the resistance power to restrict that attack. If it doesn’t, you will lose and the opponent will receive two prize cards from the deck. These are the basic rules that you can learn if you are playing the game for the first time. It is a really addictive game and gets more interesting as you learn the other complicated rules.
